Breeding FW shrimp ?
I’ve decided I’m going to use my 10 gallon to breed freshwater shrimp. Now I’m wondering what kind of shrimp to breed, and need some info on how to go about doing it. I was thinking about crystal reds, but they’re a bit expensive. Cherry reds, on the other hand, seem too cheap and not worth breeding. Another option I was considering are yellow shrimp. What kind of shrimp would be easy to breed, and make a little money too? I’d also love any info on how to breed them, proper tank setup, etc. Links would be nice. Thanks in advance
If you want to make money, you first must spend money. That’s the big dilemma. Fortunately, they’re all about the same as far as keeping and breeding, and the key is having a nice colony (start with about 10) and steady parameters. As long as you keep the temperature stable and don’t try to toy with the water chemistry too much, they’ll have plenty of babies. The more plants you give them (live or fake), the more surface area there will be for infusoria to grow on, which makes a great first food for the shrimplettes. I have bred RCS and it really is as simple as letting them be. Keep in mind that RCS and Yellow Shrimp are the same species, so they can and will interbreed– this should be avoided if you want to sell their babies, as “mutts” won’t be worth as much. However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start out with 8-10 RCS and 8-10 CRS and letting them do their own things, even in a 10 gallon tank. Of course, they will need more walking space, so plants and driftwood are great ideas. They will not eat their eggs or shrimplettes (females carry the eggs under their abdomens), so you don’t need to separate them, either.
If money might be a problem, I’d suggest starting out with either the RCS OR Yellows, just to get the hang of keeping and breeding shrimp. Once you start making money back, you could then start a little CRS farm…
